Almaty City Day Gallery Exhibit: "Almaty - Manifested on Film" Reimagined

City's AIMAGM joins forces with Eurasia Cultural Alliance for the upcoming event collaboration.

Capturing the Heart of Almaty:

Step into the world of street photography with a fresh exhibition, "Almaty Through Developed Film," now gracing the walls of the State Art Gallery - Almaty Gallery. Straight out of the darkroom and into your eyes, this black-and-white masterpiece is a collaboration between two contemporary lensmen, capturing the soul of the city.

Back in 1956, a budding photographer named Alim Khaydarov first hit the streets of Almaty, capturing the city's raw spirit at the tender age of 12. As the city has evolved into a sprawling metropolis, Khaydarov can't help but feel a pang of nostalgia.

"You can't stop progress, but I miss the snug, old Almaty that we should've preserved for future generations—especially the '50s buildings. They're still standing, still good," Khaydarov shares his sentiments.

Get ready to journey through time as this photographic duo weaves the old and new Almaty into a single narrative. The exhibition continues through October 4, offering a dialogue between these two talented street photographers, who each showcase a passion for their home city.

Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, Almaty hasn't skipped a beat in keeping the arts alive. As Nailea Mulukova, acting head of the city's Culture Department, stresses, there are four concerts in the pipeline to complement the online events already available.

Looking for a photographic journey through the city's nooks and crannies? You might find inspiration in the "Thousand-Faced Almaty," an online exhibition hosted by the Sabit Mukanov and Gabit Musrepov museums. The team showcased never-before-shared, personal archive photos, offering a unique glimpse into the city's everyday scenes.

Though details about a specific exhibition titled "Almaty - Developed Film" remain scarce, the city's commitment to fostering an inspiring art scene is evident. The pledge for contemporary art and cultural exchange, such as the renovation of a Soviet-era cinema by British architect Asif Khan, hints at a vibrant artistic future for Almaty. Meanwhile, Central Asian artists like Alexander Ugay earn global acclaim, proving that Almaty could very well host similar interdisciplinary artistic endeavors in the near future.
