Ancient Castle Remains in Torgelow Lie in Peaceful Slumber

The picturesque town of Torgelow, with a population comparable to Pasewalk, is home to a unique historical treasure - the Castrum Turglowe. This historic site, located in the town centre on the banks of the Uecker, has a rich history that spans over centuries.

Built between 1925 and 1926, the Villa in Torgelow, now around 100 years old, is more than just a mere structure. Today, it houses the city information office, the registry office, an exhibition, and rooms for the association. However, the Villa's history is deeply intertwined with the Castrum Turglowe, the medieval castle and settlement ruin next to it.

The Castrum Turglowe, first mentioned in a charter by Margrave Otto IV of Brandenburg in April 14, 1281, was a significant medieval castle. It was modeled after the 12th to 13th centuries, the High Middle Ages, and featured interactive elements, making it almost the only museum of its kind in Europe where history can be touched.

After World War II, the Villa housed displaced persons and later served as a kindergarten. Plans to establish a hotel in the Villa after reunification failed, and restitution claims were unsuccessful. The current state of the Castrum Turglowe is almost completely overgrown, blocking the view into the small landscape park and the medieval settlement.

In an effort to preserve this historical structure and improve tourist accessibility, the renovation of the Castrum Turglowe is currently ongoing. The city took over the property and renovated it with funding from 2004 to 2006. In the adjacent former landscape park, there is a medieval settlement reconstructed according to historical models.

However, the Castrum Turglowe is not purely Neoclassical in its architectural style. If ruins hadn't been in fashion, the Castrum Turglowe structure would have been demolished. The Villa, while housing the city's administrative functions, bears the mark of an 'act of historical vandalism' according to some historians.

Despite this, the renovation work continues, with funding currently being awaited to secure and renovate the remains of the castle complex in Torgelow. The castle ruin next to the Villa stands as a testament to the town's rich history, inviting visitors to step back in time and explore the past.
