RHS Urban Show 2023: A Celebration of Urban Gardening in Manchester
The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) is bringing its Urban Show to Depot Mayfield in Manchester from Thursday 18 April through to Sunday 21 April. This year's event is dedicated to small space growing, offering a wealth of inspiration for urban dwellers.
The Punk Rockery Garden, originally designed by Amanda Grimes at RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival in 2021, is a highlight of the show. This garden, focused on giving new and inexperienced gardeners the confidence to start gardening, features 38 plants organised according to their preferred light, shade, or humidity conditions. Each plant comes with a QR code for care guides, making it easy for beginners to get started.
Amanda Grimes has also designed two beds inspired by Manchester's music scene for the Punk Rockery Garden. Meanwhile, Nathan Webster has created an urban forest at the show, based on his Best in Show Garden at RHS Flower Show Tatton Park.
For those with a passion for house plants, GrowTropicals will be staging an exhibit focusing on their care. The exhibit will be filled with a variety of plants, each with its own unique care requirements.
In addition to the gardens, the former railway building will host talks from Michael Perry, Tom Massey, Tinie Tempah, Dario Spagnoli from RHS Science, and Tony Le-Britton. Designer Emma Tipping has also designed a pub garden inside Depot Mayfield, and local pubs have the opportunity to win it.
The show will also feature Mayfield, Manchester's new urban park, a beautiful public space that could serve as a blueprint for city developments elsewhere. There will be 'Content Cubes' which are small areas filled with inspiration on tricky urban gardening problems such as shade, rainwater capture, and wildlife containers.
The RHS's urban show taking place this week is the first large-scale urban show. Ticket prices for the show start from £17.50 for non-members and £14.85 for members. More information about the RHS Urban Show can be found on its official page.
Don't miss out on this opportunity to learn, be inspired, and take home some new gardening skills. The RHS Urban Show is more than just a garden show - it's a celebration of the power of green spaces in urban environments.
