Art event titled "The Art of Europe" held at Gütersloh Town Hall
In the heart of Gütersloh, the city hall is currently hosting an exhibition that aims to symbolise art as a bridge for European unity. The exhibition, titled "Art of Europe", is taking place from September to October 2025, as part of Gütersloh's city anniversary celebrations, "200 years of Gütersloh".
The exhibition was officially opened on Tuesday, 2nd September 2025, during a vernissage attended by various artists and dignitaries. Among those in attendance were Swedish artist Nina Edling, known for her intricate woodcut and linocut works that explore the relationship between humans and nature, inner reflection, and the longing for closeness and security, and SOMEART, the street artist from the partner city of Grudziądz, whose interdisciplinary works push the boundaries of genres.
The artworks on display are a testament to the local connections of Gütersloh's partner cities: Broxtowe (UK), Châteauroux (FR), Falun (SE), and Grudziądz (PL). The exhibition features contemporary artworks, ranging from photography to intricate prints, by artists from these cities.
Toby Anderton's work "Europe together" is a schematic map of Europe with adjacent countries, clearly expressing the artist's commitment to Europe. British photographers Lesley Grand-Scrutton and Jane Shipton, as well as illustrator and designer Toby Anderton, are among the contributors from England.
From France, Bruno Dewaele, a photographer, contributes works that create visual treasure hunts through Europe, combining details and architectural elements into a single image like a filmstrip.
The gallery at the Forum of the city hall is hosting the contemporary artworks, while a related European cultural exhibition titled "Connecting Europe — European Amateur Art" runs from September 6 to October 26, 2025, in the Serpil Neuhaus Gallery. This exhibition features amateur artists from the same partner cities.
Additionally, a group exhibition called "Kunst verbindet Europa" ("Art connects Europe") runs from September 3 to the end of October 2025 in the Forum Gallery of the Stadthalle Gütersloh. This exhibition showcases contemporary works by artists from these same partner cities, including named artists Toby Anderton, Lesley Grand-Scrutton, Jane Shipton (UK), Bruno Dewaele (France), Nina Edling (Sweden), and SOMEART (Poland).
The exhibition opening was rounded off with music by the Ensemble Vinorosso. In a conversation with Culture Commissioner Andreas Kimpel, Edling and SOMEART expressed their support for European unity and the C-City partnership network. The "Art of Europe" exhibition encourages viewers to shift perspectives and see how art can promote European unity.
