Expansion Planned for Family Support Centre in Detmold
State Secretary Lorenz Bahr (Greens) recently visited Detmold to examine lighthouse projects for families and child protection. One of the key projects he inspected was the Familien.Info.Treff (F.I.T.), a family support centre offering a range of services under one roof.
F.I.T. serves as a central point of contact for families, providing advice by a family midwife and answering questions about childcare places. The focus of the visit was on F.I.T. and the child protection project K.I.D.S., which has a state-wide model character.
K.I.D.S. is a satellite office of the youth welfare office with two beds for emergency care of children. It provides child-friendly care for up to ten days in emergency situations, particularly important for children taken into care due to suspicion of child endangerment. The project allows children to be cared for near their familiar environment during clarification of further accommodation or return to family.
Around 100 times a year, the child protection team of the city portal resorts to K.I.D.S. for care. Youth welfare office director Renate Berger explains that K.I.D.S. helps specialists understand children and families better. It acts as a deceleration in the process of taking children into care and other youth welfare measures.
The city of Detmold, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, and various local sponsors and donors financially support K.I.D.S. Jennifer Sonneborn, head of the Department of Youth, School, and Sports in Detmold, stated that the city uses funding to explore new ways and make projects permanent if successful.
State family minister Josefine Paul wants to see the Detmold model for families, young people, and children this summer. She expressed her support for the continuation of the path taken by youth welfare experts and the mayor.
However, not all projects have been successful in securing funding. The "Elternchancen" project, which offered low-threshold advice and support directly at two schools, has been discontinued or not funded further due to lack of funds from the state or federal government.
The city plans to expand F.I.T. directly next to the Bildungs.Info.Treff B.I.T., which provides answers to questions about school, career orientation, and city affairs for young people. This expansion aims to create a comprehensive support system for families and young people in Detmold.
Bahr expressed his appreciation for the innovative and effective work being done in Detmold, and expressed his hope that these models could be replicated in other cities across the state.
