Berlin's cutting-edge upcycling fashion label, Plaid-à-Porter, reinvents the classic craft of patchwork
New Fashion Brand Plaid-à-Porter Makes a Statement with Vintage-Inspired Sustainable Designs
Estelle Adeline Trasoglu, a former fashion journalist, has made a bold transition into the world of fashion design with her brand Plaid-à-Porter. Using her industry contacts and knowledge, Trasoglu has kickstarted a unique business that transforms vintage patchwork quilts and blankets into contemporary, wearable art pieces.
Plaid-à-Porter's first collection, released in February, featured quilted coats, cropped jackets, zip-up skirts, and waistcoats. The brand's focus on patchwork and upcycling techniques results in each piece being a distinct design, carrying historical and emotional value. By redefining traditional materials as modern fashion statements, Plaid-à-Porter emphasises individuality and sustainable innovation.
Trasoglu sources elaborately-crafted vintage quilts from the US and South America for her designs. Each blanket or quilt yields enough material for up to four pieces in Trasoglu's designs, requiring utmost precision in the transformation process.
The brand's first drop of crocheted tops and dresses launched on Plaid-à-Porter's website in June. Trasoglu's designs have a muted boho look, which coincides with the renaissance of boho-chic in February.
Trasoglu's brand is increasingly focusing on pieces made from vintage tablecloths and handmade German lace. One of her most notable designs is 'The Tamer Jacket', which was made for her husband. In July, Trasoglu will showcase two looks at Berlin Fashion Week's Berliner Salon, marking her first major milestone as a fashion designer.
Trasoglu argues that the investment in her expensive designs, with prices ranging from €900 to €1,200, is worth it because the pieces can last a lifetime and can be passed on. She views her fashion as a "creative rebellion against throwaway culture".
Before founding her brand, Trasoglu worked as a fashion journalist for 10 years, writing for the industry's most renowned publications. After contemplating a return to fashion journalism, she decided to start her own fashion brand, Plaid-à-Porter, after the birth of her first child in 2021.
Trasoglu left a successful career in Berlin to join her partner and later started Plaid-à-Porter. She can be followed on Instagram at @plaid_a_porter and the collection can be shopped on the website. Trasoglu is also working on a sustainability report for Plaid-à-Porter's website that will offer full transparency on the environmental impact of her designs.
Plaid-à-Porter's unique approach to fashion, combining vintage craftsmanship with contemporary design, is sure to make a lasting impression in the fashion industry.
In order to expand her brand's reach, Estelle Adeline Trasoglu is planning to introduce 'Plaid-à-Porter' to the realm of lifestyle, showcasing home decor pieces made from vintage tablecloths and handmade German lace, thereby creating a harmonious blend of fashion-and-beauty with home-and-garden. Furthermore, Trasoglu is committed to promoting sustainable living by releasing a sustainability report on her website, providing transparency on the environmental impact of her designs and encouraging a culture of enduring, reusable, and eco-friendly products.
