Berlin's upcoming major museum, titled "Berlin modern," is assuming form at the Cultural Forum
In the heart of Berlin, a new cultural landmark is taking shape. The Museum of Modern Art, a significant addition to the city's artistic landscape, is currently under construction, with initial structures emerging on the site.
The competition phase for the project was centred around the integration of the museum into the urban landscape, and it was this criterion that the Swiss architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron, known for their innovative designs, focused on. The firm, renowned for their work on the Tate Modern in London, is set to bring their expertise to Berlin.
The new museum will complement the existing Neue Nationalgalerie, adding an additional 9,000 square meters of exhibition space, making it a substantial expansion. This expansion will serve as a connecting element in the heterogeneous ensemble of the Kulturforum, providing a cohesive and harmonious addition to the existing architecture.
Support for the design comes from the Zurich-based landscape architecture firm Vogt, who will be responsible for the museum's integration into the city's greenery. The new museum will be located near the Berliner Philharmonie and the Neue Nationalgalerie, further enhancing the cultural significance of the area.
The works from the Pietzsch, Marx, and Marzona collections, as well as the Kunstbibliothek, will be displayed in the new museum. These collections, which include pieces by renowned artists such as Andy Warhol and Gerhard Richter, promise to make the museum a must-visit destination for art enthusiasts.
The winning design was selected in 2016 from an international competition, marking the beginning of the project's journey. The architect team that designed the new Museum of Modern Art in Berlin is Staab Architekten. They created the extension building for the Bauhaus-Archiv / Museum für Gestaltung in Berlin, demonstrating their commitment to contemporary museum architecture focused on accessibility and transparency.
The completion date for the new museum is set for 2027, providing art lovers with something exciting to look forward to in the coming years. As the project progresses, Berlin's cultural landscape continues to evolve, promising a vibrant and dynamic future for the city's art scene.
