Celebrating Maria Carmen Gambliel: A Pioneering Artist and Cultural Advocate
A celebration of life for Maria Carmen Gambliel, a renowned artist, printmaker, and folklorist, will be held on August 19, 2025, at the Basque Center in Boise, ID. The event honours her enduring contributions to the arts and her support for various ethnic communities.
Born on June 11, 1946, in Minas Gerais, Brazil, Maria Carmen moved to the U.S. in 1981 and earned her MA and MFA in printmaking at the University of New Mexico. It was here that she met her future husband, biochemist Hervé Gambliel. In 1995, Maria Carmen settled in Boise, Idaho, and two years later, she became the director of the Folk and Traditional Arts Program at the Idaho Commission on the Arts.
During her tenure, she supported artists of various ethnic backgrounds, refugees, cowboy poets, and folklore artists. Maria Carmen was known for her engaging spirit, boundless energy, and cultural advocacy. She co-founded the Casa Litográfica and taught at the Escola Guignard in Belo Horizonte before her passing on May 24, 2025, at the age of seventy-nine.
