In the heart of Regensburg, a debate is unfolding over the proposed transformation of a section of the city park. Known as the "festival meadow," this planned area is intended to serve as a more sustainable solution for events such as the Night in Blue and the Children's Citizens' Festival. However, the Bavarian Conservation Association (Bayerischer Naturschutzverband, or BN) has raised concerns about the project, fearing commercialization and an increase in events.

The proposed "festival meadow" is, in reality, an "art-rich gravel lawn with irrigation system." The renovation of an over 50-year-old artwork by Pino Poggi, called fountain H, is part of the plans. The gravel area is seen as a solution for events, with two footpaths to be stabilised and a power supply pillar set up in the park.

Mayor Artinger is upset by the criticism, but has decided against issuing a statement denying the intention to increase events in the city park. The CSU leader, Michael Lehner, supports the idea that every event that brings more visitors is a good thing.

Council members across all factions find the plans good, but have questions about the costs for the fountain renovation. The city plans to spend around 450,000 euros for several measures in the city park, including the "festival meadow."

Chairman Raimund Schoberer of the Bavarian Conservation Association speaks of commercialization and "greenwashing." He fears that the city park, currently a relaxation oasis for Regensburg residents, may become an event meadow. The BN sees the park as a vital space for local wildlife and worries about the potential impact on biodiversity.

Helene Sigloch (Greens) has questioned whether there are more events planned, to which Artinger has responded that there are no corresponding plans. Thomas Thurow (Bridge) assures that the festival grounds will not be a fairground or festival place.

Despite the controversy, the central point of contention remains the planned "festival meadow" southwest of the Ostdeutsche Galerie. The BN's skepticism regarding the plans for the art-rich gravel lawn in the city park continues, with no clear resolution in sight. The debate underscores the delicate balance between urban development and environmental conservation, a challenge faced by many cities worldwide.

Science plays a role in the renovation plans for the city park's "festival meadow," as the proposal includes an over 50-year-old artwork by Pino Poggi, called fountain H. Meanwhile, the environmental science community, represented by the Bavarian Conservation Association (Bayerischer Naturschutzverband, or BN), is concerned about the potential commercialization and impact on biodiversity, raising questions about the balancing act between urban development and preserving the natural environment.
