Cliffside Mexican sanctuary delivers a dramatic flair and a strong sense of location
Nestled on the dramatic cliffs of Mexico's Pacific Coast, Casa Piscina del Cielo is a remarkable architectural marvel that defies convention. Designed by Zozaya Arquitectos, the practice headed by Enrique Zozaya, the home is a testament to environmentally-sensitive design and seamless integration with the surrounding landscape.
The architects' goal was to create a structure that feels singular and paradigm-breaking, yet unobtrusive and harmonious with its natural setting. This is evident in the home's design, which blends effortlessly into the cliff and green surroundings, with the entrance emerging from the ground among native foliage.
Casa Piscina del Cielo is a 1,900 square meter residence that includes two bedrooms, an independent guest wing, multiple living spaces, leisure rooms such as a cinema and a gym, and support areas for storage and services. The central courtyard leads to an expansive living space that includes a kitchen, dining area, and terrace, all covered by a palapa.
The home's design elements harmonise with the surrounding landscape, and the landscaping by Taller Entorno further reinforces this illusion. The long, blue swimming pool is a prominent feature of the home, extending off the main building and hanging over the cliff. The living space opens onto the pool deck and the 27-meter-long swimming pool that offers views of the horizon.
The architects describe Casa Piscina del cielo as a structure that listens to, interprets, and elevates the land. This is particularly evident in the design of the pool deck, where standing on it provides a surreal sensation of floating, as if the sea and sky had merged beneath one's feet due to a window embedded in the pool's floor.
The home's design prioritises sustainability. Passive heating, cooling, and ventilation are employed, and a water treatment plant for greywater recycling is included for irrigation purposes. The landscaping aims to make the house feel as if it has always been a part of the natural environment.
Casa Piscina del Cielo, in Zihuatanejo, Mexico, is a dramatic clifftop retreat that defies convention and offers a unique living experience that is both singular and harmonious with nature.
