Commemorating a Decade as UNESCO World Heritage: Hamburg honors its city of historical reminiscence

On September 20, the city of Hamburg will commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Speicherstadt and Kontorhausviertel's UNESCO World Heritage Listing with a special event: the "Long Night of the World Heritage". This night-time celebration aims to showcase the unique architecture and history of these iconic districts.

The event will take place from Thursday to Saturday, offering visitors a chance to explore these areas from an evening perspective. Highlights include behind-the-scenes tours at Miniatur Wunderland, the world's largest miniature railway exhibition, and the Maritime Museum, which will offer discounted tickets for the occasion.

One of the main attractions is the Festival of Lights, where warehouse block P will be transformed into a living canvas with a video projection. The video tells the story of the Speicherstadt, providing insights into its rich history and the goods that were once stored within its walls, such as coffee, rubber, palm oil, cocoa beans, and other colonial goods.

Other attractions include the Speicherstadtmuseum, which delves into the history of the Speicherstadt quarter, and Spicy's Gewürzmuseum, which offers a journey through time with its Hamburg merchant tour. For puzzle enthusiasts, an escape game is available, allowing participants to explore hidden secrets of the Speicherstadt using tablets and night vision devices.

The Speicherstadt, constructed between 1883 and 1927, is the world's largest historical warehouse complex. It was built south of the old town on the former Elbe islands and residential quarters of Kehrwieder and Wandrahm. In 2015, it was joined by the Kontorhausviertel and Chilehaus on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Culture Senator Carsten Brosda (SPD) stated that the World Heritage status places the Speicherstadt and Kontorhausviertel alongside world-famous structures. He encouraged the public to participate in the "Long Night of the World Heritage" event, emphasising its role in shaping the identity of Hamburg.

So, mark your calendars and join Hamburg in celebrating this milestone. The "Long Night of the World Heritage" promises to be an unforgettable experience, offering a unique blend of history, culture, and entertainment.
