Community Quilting Event Scheduled for This Weekend

The annual Clearmont Women's Club Quilting Bee is set to take place on Saturday, September 20, at the Clearmont Library and Community Center. This old tradition, originating in the 19th Century, has evolved from an essential part of homemaking to a relaxing hobby, and more importantly, a means to give back to the community.

Over the years, quilts made by the Women's Club have been donated to various organisations, including local hospitals, nursing homes, veterans' groups, the VA, homeless shelters, and The Sheridan Foster Parent Exchange. This year is no exception, as the quilts created at the Quilting Bee will be donated to these same organisations, as well as others in need.

The quilters at the Quilting Bee create a variety of quilts, from lap quilts to twin, full size, and occasionally queen size quilts. The event is open to all quilters or anyone who wants to help. All attendees are asked to bring a dish to share for the potluck lunch, which will be held at noon during the Quilting Bee.

The Sheridan Foster Parent Exchange, founded in 2013, provides 'care kits' for children placed in the foster care system. Sometimes, these care kits include quilts from the Clearmont Women's Club. These kits include seven days' worth of clothes and other essentials, providing comfort and a sense of home for these children during a challenging time.

Quilting bees were also used as a way for women to socialize and exchange community news. This tradition continues today, as the Quilting Bee provides a friendly and welcoming environment for all who attend.

The Clearmont Women's Club Quilting Bee is more than just a day of crafting. It's a day of community, camaraderie, and giving back. If you're a quilter or simply want to lend a hand, we hope to see you there.
