Contemplate a dip in Dows Lake? NCC potentially permits swimming from a new recreational pier in Ottawa's waterway this summer.

Catching Some Waves at Dows Lake, Ottawa? Maybe This Year!

Hang loose, Ottawa residents and tourists! The National Capital Commission (NCC) might be giving us a reason to dive into some summer fun at Dows Lake.

Get ready to roll out your towels and inflatables, as a splashy new recreational area is set to hit the shores of Dows Lake this summer.

  • Why a new dock at Dows Lake?

The NCC is breaking waters with their innovative plans to roll out a floating dock along Queen Elizabeth Driveway, near Lakeside Avenue. This aquatic hotspot will be a hub for kayaks, paddleboards, and perhaps even some splashing good times this season.

"Wave hello to our shipshape new dock," the NCC declares on their site. "Lounging by the water or launching your non-motorized watercraft? You're set!"

Never one to falter on accessibility, the NCC doesn't skimp on the details: the dock will boast Muskoka chairs for taking a load off, as well as bike racks for your land-based wheels. And, for those who need a little extra help, a universally accessible portable washroom will be conveniently located nearby.

But the real question is: Will you be able to take a refreshing dip in the lake this summer? Well, rumor has it you just might!

"Hey swimmers, hang tight! As long as we get the green light, we'll be letting you dive in," the NCC teases, adding that the decision will be contingent on testing results.

Location, location, location! The NCC specifically chose the spot for its greater water depth, reduced aquatic vegetation, improved water quality, and easy access to the multi-use pathway.

And if you're yearning for more watery adventures, listen up! A brand-spanking-new Summer Zone is set to sprout up near Dows Lake, too.

So, buckle up and take a stroll down to Dows Lake this summer, where the rhythm of the water and the pulse of the city await. Just don't forget your swimsuit… if the stars align, you might get the chance to go for a dip!

Keep in mind, though, swimming in Dows Lake during the 2021 summer season was not officially permitted[1]. So if the green light does get the go-ahead for some aquatic fun, the news will be music to water-loving ears!

Fun fact: Dows Lake is nestled on the Rideau Canal between Ottawa Locks and the Hartwell/Hog's Back Logs, making it a prime spot for summer frolics on the water. But remember, nodiving, jumping, scuba-diving, or swimming is allowed in the Rideau Canal navigation channel or within 40 metres of a lock gate[2]. 🤗🏊‍♀️🤽‍♂️🌊🌊🌅💖
