Cultivating Squash: A Guide to Sowing, Nurturing, Reaping, and Preservation

Planting

Growing and Care
Water deeply and consistently, providing about 1 inch of water per week, especially during flowering and fruit development to prevent stress. Mulch around plants to retain moisture and moderate soil temperature. Fertilize monthly with a balanced fertilizer or side dress midseason with compost or organic fertilizer. Liquid feeds like fish emulsion or seaweed extract every 2-3 weeks can boost growth and health. Prune and thin plants to improve airflow and reduce disease risk; trellising helps keep fruits off the ground. Monitor for pests such as squash bugs and diseases like powdery mildew; crop rotation and introducing beneficial insects can help control these.
Harvesting
Harvest squash when fruits are young and tender for best flavor: typically 6-10 inches long for summer/silk squash, about 90-100 days for winter types like butternut. Pick frequently, every day or two during peak growth, to encourage continuous fruit production. For winter squash, harvest when the skin hardens and color deepens. Cut fruits from the vine with a sharp knife, leaving a 2-inch stem attached to prolong storage life.
Storing
Store harvested squash in a cool, dry place such as a basement or cellar at about 50-55°F (10-13°C) with good ventilation. Summer squash like zucchini should be used within 5-7 days as they have a short shelf life. Winter squash can be stored for several months if fully cured in a warm, dry place for 1-2 weeks after harvest to harden their skin.
