Darken the day, let the celestial bodies shine

This weekend, from the 9th to the 10th of August, several towns in the Rhön region are participating in the "Lights Out, Stars On!" event. The participating towns include Ebersburg, Ehrenberg, Tann, Bad Brückenau, and potentially Bischofsheim, although a comprehensive list has not been provided.

The event is part of the Sternenpark weeks in the Rhön and aims to allow people to witness a starry sky they might not otherwise recognise. Sabine Frank from Sternenpark Rhön explained that the event seeks to demonstrate that unnecessary nighttime light can be reduced without compromising safety or convenience.

During the event, many places will turn off their street lighting, including large buildings in towns like Fulda and Petersberg. In Wildflecken, the lights will be turned off from Friday to Saturday and from Sunday to Monday.

Sabine Frank also highlighted the issue of light pollution, explaining that excessive nighttime light can disturb animals and the event seeks to address this issue. The event is an opportunity to raise awareness about light pollution and its impact on both the environment and our perception of the night sky.

While the exact locations participating in the event are not specified, Sabine Frank encourages people to go out and stroll through towns to observe the night sky during the event. Shooting stars may be less visible due to the full moon, but there will still be many to see during the event.

Sabine Frank expressed hope that the event will serve as an incentive for more communities to reduce nighttime street lighting in the future. She also mentioned that the event is an opportunity to help people understand their place in a different way without artificial light.

For precise and updated details, checking the official Rhön Sternenpark website or contacting Rhön Tourismus directly might be required.

  1. The "Lights Out, Stars On!" event, falling under the Sternenpark weeks in the Rhön, is backed by Environmental Science, as it encourages outdoor-living by addressing climate-change related issue of light pollution.
  2. As part of the event, various homes and gardens will dim their lights, contributing to a significant reduction in needless nighttime illumination, keeping in line with the principles of science and lifestyle changes.
  3. Furthermore, after observing the glimmer of stars in the stunning night sky during the event, one may reconsider their perspective on home-and-garden design by incorporating elements that minimize light pollution, hence adopting outdoor-living in sync with environmental science principles.
