In the spirit of the festive season, we bring you a simple yet elegant Christmas decoration idea that celebrates nature. This DIY project involves a sturdy branch, crab apples, florist's stub wire, and ribbon. Let's get started!

Preparing the Branch

Begin by selecting a branch with an interesting shape or texture. Give it a clean if necessary.

Attaching Crab Apples

Use the florist's stub wire, which has a small ring on one end, to secure the crab apples onto the branch. Wrap the wire gently around the crab apples’ stems, and then twist or wrap it tightly around the branch. This ensures the apples are firmly attached and spaced attractively.

Adding Ribbon

Tie ribbon bows or streamers around the branch and between crab apples to add a festive touch and color contrast. If you'd like to suspend the decoration, use ribbon loops as hangers by creating a larger ring with the florist's stub wire and threading the ribbon through it.

Optional Enhancements

For an even more natural Christmas look, integrate other elements like pine cones, sprigs of evergreen, or dried flowers. Wiring or tying them alongside the crab apples will enhance the overall decoration.

Display

Hang your decorated branch on a wall, door, or mantle, or lay it flat as a centrepiece.

This approach uses the natural charm of the crab apples and branch combined with decorative ribbon, securely affixed by florist wire. If you're looking for more ideas for natural Christmas decorations, be sure to check out our Christmas hub, filled with festive content.

Stylist Kristy Ramage has also shared this method, which aligns with standard craft practices involving natural materials and florist wire for handmade décor. For this project, we recommend using crab apples from the variety 'Evereste'.

To make the process easier, remember that a small ring is formed on one end of the florist's stub wire. The smaller end of the wire is pushed through the base of a crab apple, and the larger ring is used to thread the ribbon, creating a loop. The length of the ribbon can be approximately 26cm with diagonal ends, and it can be cut into smaller lengths of 6-7cm for better handling.

You'll need a galvanised bucket with stones and chippings to arrange your materials before starting the project. Happy crafting, and enjoy the festive season!

This DIY project not only adds a touch of outdoor-living to your home-and-garden decor, but also incorporates gardens elements like crab apples into a simple yet elegant Christmas design. With the addition of ribbons, the branch transforms into a stylish wall decoration or centerpiece, enhancing your lifestyle and festive atmosphere.
