Delve into the past - Monastery Memleben undergoes an expansion, offering a chance to immerse in medieval life - Delve into Medieval Era History - Expansion of Monastery Memleben Unveiled
The historic town of Memleben, known for being the resting place of the first German emperor, Otto the Great, is set to undergo a significant transformation. The expansion of the Museum Kloster and Kaiserpfalz Memleben, located in the Burgenlandkreis district, is progressing well and is expected to be completed by early 2026.
The new building, nestled in the cloister area, is a part of the "Barrier-free Access and Annex" project, which carries an approximate cost of 5.5 million euros. The project, initiated in January 2023, involves the demolition of a previous DDR-era shell and the construction of the new building.
Despite the ongoing construction work, the museum remains open to visitors. The expansion aims to improve the museum’s attractiveness, educational functions, and event capacities. The new building will fill a gap in the monastery ensemble and will include four event rooms, a staircase, an elevator, sanitary facilities, an outdoor area for museum educational activities, and a vaulted cellar that can be used for events.
The outdoor area, already completed, will provide a space for museum educational activities on sunny days. The new building will offer more opportunities for school visits and museum visitors, making Memleben even more attractive.
The district administrator of Burgenlandkreis, Goetz Ulrich, has provided details about the new building, emphasising the creation of event rooms, a staircase, an elevator, sanitary facilities, an outdoor area, and a vaulted cellar.
Minister-President Reiner Haseloff (CDU) has expressed his pleasure about the project, stating that it will make Memleben more attractive. The new building is set to provide spaces for museum educational work, further enhancing the town's historical significance and appeal.
