Designs for a skate park revealed in Enzauenpark, unveiled by architects

The City of Enzauen is moving forward with plans to build a new skate park, set to be located south of the Enz, near the now-defunct sports facility "Holzhof". The project, which caters to all skill levels, has been in the development phase since the city council unanimously decided to build it as early as May 2022.

The new skate park will feature bowls, ramps, rails, and street elements, making it suitable for skateboarders, BMX riders, and inline skaters. Safety, accessibility, and integration with the natural surroundings of Enzauenpark are key priorities in the design. The facility aims to provide a community space for youth and promote outdoor activity.

Construction is scheduled to begin in late summer 2025, with an expected completion date in spring 2026. An official opening event is planned for late spring 2026.

The City of Enzauen's Department of Parks and Recreation is spearheading the project. A local skateboarding association was consulted for design input and community needs. An experienced landscape architecture firm specializing in recreational facilities was contracted for the design and planning. Construction will be handled by a regional contractor well-versed in public recreational projects. Funding is a mix of municipal budget allocations, community grants, and private sponsorships.

Two successful and well-attended participation workshops have already taken place for the skate park project. The third and, for now, last public participation event will take place on Tuesday, September 12, 2023. This event, occurring at 5 pm at the Old City Garden in the Enzauenpark, Hohwiesenweg 40, will provide an opportunity for the public to voice their specific wishes and suggestions for the skate park project.

Ralf Maier, a former BMX professional, German champion, and world champion, will be present at the events. The city acknowledges Maier's wealth of knowledge in BMX and skate park planning. Maier has been contributing to the planning and implementation of the participation workshops for the skate park project. His discussions with Philip Sonau, the landscape architect, have helped shape the designs for the skate park.

The idea for the skate park location was initially proposed by a group of young people and young adults from the skate scene before the decision. The event on September 12, 2023, is a chance for the public to engage with Maier and contribute to the final design of the skate park.

The skate park will include lighting for evening use, seating areas for spectators, and nearby green spaces. The project is progressing with concrete plans, and more detailed updates or reports from the City of Enzauen or the local parks department can be found for those interested in staying informed.

In the context of the skate park project in Enzauen, the department of parks and recreation plans to integrate the facility with the natural surroundings of Enzauenpark, encouraging outdoor activity as part of a healthy lifestyle. The new park will not only cater to skateboarders, BMX riders, and inline skaters but also aim to serve as a community space for youth, promoting outdoor-living and fostering a home-and-garden vibe with nearby green spaces and seating areas for spectators.
