Dog Travel without Muzzle: Potential Risks for Omar Sy when Travelling with His Pet on SNCF

France finds itself embroiled in a controversy involving actor Omar Sy, following an altercation at Lyon train station on Thursday, May 22nd. According to multiple media outlets, the actor reportedly made "threatening remarks" towards a SNCF train conductor amid a dispute over a leashed dog. The latter led to a complaint from SNCF.

The dog in question, an American Staffordshire, was unleashed during the incident, creating tension that resulted in controversy surrounding the French personality. As per local newspaper La Provence, the actor may have even issued "death threats."

Traveling with pets on SNCF trains in France is subject to specific rules and regulations. SNCF's website outlines these guidelines, applicable to TGV, TER, and Intercity trains. The fare differs based on the dog's size, with small animals that fit within a carrier measuring up to 45 cm x 30 cm x 25 cm costing €7, while larger dogs traveling without a carrier require a €20 ticket. Moreover, all dogs should remain under control and be kept on a leash throughout the journey.

Larger dogs are also required to wear muzzles for the entirety of the journey, with the exception of guide or assistance dogs, which can travel free of charge. Passengers are reminded that the animal must be accompanied and remain the owner's responsibility throughout the journey, and relevant identification documents are required.

SNCF highlights the importance of these rules to ensure the safety and comfort of all passengers and pets aboard trains. It's worth noting that certain dog breeds commonly have muzzling mandated in France to maintain safety on board. Omar Sy's dog reportedly belongs to a breed that typically requires muzzling under French law.

It remains to be seen if Omar Sy was informed of these rules, as investigations continue. In public spaces outside of transportation, certain dogs must wear a muzzle in law enforcement's pursuit of public safety.
