Historic Beauty: Dresden's Zwinger Courtyard Nears Finish Line

Reconstruction of Palatine Garden in Dresden is now almost finished. - Dresden Zwinger's inner courtyard undergoing renovation prior to its completion.

Get ready, folks! Dresden's famed Zwinger courtyard is about to shine again! This epic tourist hotspot in Germany's Elbe city is on the brink of a spectacular comeback by August end, according to a spokesperson for the Saxon State Property and Building Management (SIB). Already, two of the four fountains have been rejuvenated, the media trench is done, and a snazzy new ramp to the courtyard is built.

The grassy mirror and pathways in the western half have beened restored, with some portions already open. As the SIB rep puts it, "More than half of the western courtyard is open and ready for visitors!" Work on the Crown Gate involves installing manhole covers and replacing temporary surfaces with only the finest sandstone. The fascinating landscape construction works in the eastern half are currently underway. The grand total for this massive project is a cool 15.4 million euros.

Baroque Delight

The Dresden Zwinger is the granddaddy of Baroque structures and a symbol of the city, alongside the magnificent Crown Gate. The architecture, featuring six pavilions, several arches, and a long gallery around a symmetrical courtyard, was crafted between 1709 and 1728 under the command of Elector Augustus the Strong and the masterful hands of architect Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann and sculptor Balthasar Permoser.

This architectural marvel, inaugurated in 1719 with a royal wedding, served as a spectacular setting for princely demonstrations, court festivities, and housing the royal collection. The complex's preservation is managed by a dedicated building office, overseeing a whopping 1.2 kilometers of masonry, 15,000 square meters of facade area, terraces, staircases, and an impressive 698 sculptures.

Yearly Maintenance for Eternity

Every year, the Free State shells out around 1.5 million euros to keep this beauty intact, including introducing state-of-the-art elevators and improving fire safety in the Glockenspiel Pavilion. Alas, some traces of the previously presumed Baroque garden and medieval buildings, discovered during excavations alongside the courtyard settlement, have again been covered up, preserving these historical relics for future generations to marvel at.

From 1991 to 2024, a colossal 222 million euros were invested in the renovation and upkeep of the ensemble, which also includes the Semper Gallery built in the 19th century and shielding the area towards the Theater Square. Along with the Semper Opera House, Frauenkirche, and Residenzschloss, it ranks as one of the main tourist magnets of "Florence on the Elbe" and homes three museums of the State Art Collections.
