Düsseldorf concludes its sports-filled season in Wersten
The Glühwein hut in Wersten, a popular gathering spot for locals since November 2024, recently held its annual Christmas tree throwing event. This tradition, now in its 16th year, also serves as a world championship in Weidenthal, Bad Dürkheim district.
Located between Burscheider Straße, Werstener Feld, and Kölner Landstraße, the Glühwein hut is more than just a warm and festive destination during the Advent season. It's a hub of community spirit, as evident in its latest initiatives.
The Kultur Bud Wersten initiative, while not explicitly mentioning its founder, is expanding its offerings outside of the Advent season. The aim is to bring people together with new events such as Glühwein hikes and a small winter running series, in addition to the traditional Glühwein serving.
The Glühwein served at the hut is sourced from the Ahr region, and the proceeds from sales are donated towards recovery efforts following the 2021 flood disaster. This commitment to supporting the region is a testament to the hut's dedication to its community.
During the Christmas tree throwing event, participants were encouraged to bring their decorated natural trees. The event was held as part of the last gathering before the hut's temporary closure on January 4, 2025. The gathering also featured special Christmas traditions, such as finishing off drinks with the motto 'everything must go'.
Photos from the event were taken by Dirk Schmidt, capturing the spirit of the day. One notable photograph shows the band Fuchs&Fertig providing musical entertainment at the second Christmas tree throwing event.
Around 150 people attended the event, with most watching rather than participating. Those who did participate were encouraged to take an eggnog to ensure accuracy.
Registration for the three new Glühwein hike dates will soon be possible. Details for the small winter running series are also available. The Kultur Bud Wersten initiative aims to offer events throughout the year to bring people together in Wersten, making the Glühwein hut a true year-round community centre.
