East Devon set to install amenities akin to airports
In a bid to encourage responsible tourism and enhance convenience for motorhome users, East Devon District Council has recently improved motorhome parking facilities in the seaside town of Exmouth.
One of the key upgrades can be found at Maer Road Car Park, where a freshwater tap and disposal points for shower and wastewater have been installed. These facilities aim to promote responsible tourism and provide a more comfortable stay for motorhome users.
Another motorhome parking option is available at the rear of Koobooroo Oval, near the local Recreation Centre and Tennis Court. This site caters to motorhomes of up to 40ft/12m, with one vehicle per site allowed. Bookings are required for this site, and the specific cancellation policies and additional charges depend on booking specifications.
These improvements are part of a council-led effort endorsed by Exmouth Town Council in April 2025, aimed at formalizing overnight motorhome parking and providing better services for visitors in Exmouth.
Key updated facilities for motorhome parking in Exmouth include:
- Freshwater tap installation at Maer Road Car Park.
- Waste disposal points for showers and greywater at Maer Road.
- Designated, bookable spaces for motorhomes at Koobooroo Oval.
- A fee system contributing to enforcement and maintenance of motorhome parking areas.
- Formal council approval and community consultation backing these changes.
Visitors to these car parks will find themselves within easy reach of Exmouth's popular two-mile stretch of sandy beach. During the initial trial, payment for the overnight stay is only via RingGo, and visitors are limited to two nights; afterwards, they may not return to stay overnight for at least 72 hours. The overnight charge to stay at these car parks is set to rise from £11 to £20 per night during the trial.
Maer Road car park will offer new facilities, and Queen's Drive Echelon car park will get new parking bays for overnight visitors. These improvements were made following consultation with nearly 1000 respondents, including residents, visitors, and local businesses.
Some respondents had expressed concern about inappropriate grey-water disposal in the area, and the council has taken steps to address this issue as part of these improvements.
