In a significant move for the classical music scene, Felipe Tristán has been appointed as the sixth Artistic Director of the Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra (BSO). Tristán, a Mexican conductor with an impressive international career, will commence his new role next month.

Tristán has held various roles within the orchestra, including assistant director, associate director, and interim artistic director. His tenure with the BSO spans over ten years, and he is excited about having a home band in New York.

The process of selecting a new artistic director involved legal issues, the musicians' union, and internal regulations of the Symphony. Over 100 names were considered for the position, and Tristán was one of the four finalists.

Tristán is an acclaimed figure in classical music, known for his dynamic leadership, international experience, and efforts to innovate within the symphony orchestra tradition. He has gained international recognition in recent years, with key roles at multiple institutions across North America, Europe, Asia, and Latin America.

Under his direction, the BSO has undertaken international tours and creative collaborations, such as a campaign with J. Crew. Tristán is recognized not only for his musical artistry but also as the first Mexican conductor to receive Poland’s prestigious Muzyczne Orły Award for Best Recording.

Tristán plans to gather opinions from all musicians, including retired ones, to refresh the image and artistic vision of the orchestra. He sees the Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra as a blank canvas for his ideas, aiming to elevate the orchestra’s artistic and cultural profile by blending classical tradition with contemporary innovation.

Tristán's initial contract with the BSO is for a year. He is starting the role at a point in his career where he has motivation, energy, and ideas he's been harvesting for years. He is looking forward to exploring unconventional collaborations and experimenting with non-canon pieces during his tenure.

The formal search for a new artistic director began about a year and a half ago. With Tristán at the helm, the Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra is poised for an exciting new chapter in its history.
