Mark your calendars: Valentine's Day and Mother's Day are the busiest times for flower shops. While the season of love is always on February 14, Mother's Day moves around, gracing us this year on May 11. Amidst this flurry of customers, who may be unusual visitors to the flower shop, curiosity about the cost of a common bouquet arises. But there's more to the price tag—florists and their workers don't walk away with big paychecks.
Despite the "vocational training" nature of the job, florists rank low on the income scale. Quite the contrary to common belief, the profession isn't surrounded by wealth. Even though the job requires three years of training, the pay is modest.
Weighing the Scales: Florists' Modest Earnings
According to the Federal Employment Agency's wage atlas, the average monthly salary of florists amounts to 2,220 EUR, working a full-time, 40-hour week. A quarter of florists even earn less than 1,902 EUR, while another quarter manages to scrape more than 2,495 EUR.
In a bid to boost earnings, the responsible union IG Bau struck a two-stage wage increase agreement with the Association of German Florists (FDF) last year. By July 1, 2024, the agreed wages will uptick by 2.5% to 6%, followed by another 2.5% to 4.75% from July 1, 2025. The new hourly wage will then stand at 15.48 EUR. The agreement extends till June 30, 2026.
However, the union's efforts only apply to the western collective agreement area. Employers in the eastern federal states continue to maintain the status quo, adhering only to the general statutory minimum wage, which rose to 12.82 EUR per hour from January 1, 2023. Approximately 30,000 employees work in the flower industry.

Intriguing Facts:
It's interesting to compare the average salary of florists with other vocational training professions. For instance, horticulturists bringing home an annual average salary of 64,119 EUR translates to approximately 5,343 EUR per month, significantly higher than the average range for florists. On the other hand, gardeners with training now earn around 16.00 EUR per hour, equaling 2,560 EUR monthly for a 40-hour workweek.
Comparison Table
| Profession | Average Monthly Salary Range ||---------------------|-------------------------------|| Florist | 1,904 EUR - 3,879 EUR || Horticulturist | Approximately 5,343 EUR (annual: 64,119 EUR) || Gardener with Training | Approximately 2,560 EUR (hourly: 16.00 EUR) |
In conclusion, while florists grab a smaller portion of the pie compared to horticulturists, their earnings are steadier compared to gardeners, who base their income on hours worked. The recent collective agreement for horticulture workers will certainly shake things up in the broader vocational training sector.
- The florist's earnings on Mother's Day, though significant due to increased sales during this period, are not commensurate with the profession's standing in the vacation training sector, as shown by the average monthly salary of 2,220 EUR, according to the Federal Employment Agency.
- Comparatively, horticulturists, another vocational training profession, earn an annual average salary of 64,119 EUR, which equates to a monthly income of approximately 5,343 EUR, significantly higher than the florist's average range.
- In the lifestyle section, one may find personal-finance advice helpful, such as strategies to manage their earnings, as florists' average monthly salary might not allow for extravagant life choices, unlike those in the fashion-and-beauty or food-and-drink industries.
- For florists aiming to augment their earnings, business opportunities beyond flower arrangements could be explored, considering the various dimensions of the profession such as event planning, education, or even crafting practical products like home-and-garden décor.
- Despite the union's efforts, the income disparity between florists and professionals in related fields like horticulture and gardening remains, further emphasizing the importance of career exploration and shifting toward high-paying professions like finance or careers in the sports industry for those interested in the floral world.
