Future-ready bus stops implemented in Osnabrück city
**Osnabrück Bus Stop Program: Renovations and Modernization Underway**
The city of Osnabrück is stepping up its efforts to modernize and improve its bus stop infrastructure as part of the ongoing Osnabrück Bus Stop Program. This initiative, closely linked to the public transportation services operated by Stadtwerke Osnabrück, aims to ensure a reliable, accessible, and efficient bus service across the region.
This year, the program targets the renovation of several bus stops, including those on Nordstraße, OS-Workshops on Frankfurter Heerstraße (in both city centre and outbound directions), and Moskaubad. The total cost of these measures is 750,000 euros, and the renovated bus stop on Nordstraße boasts new energy-saving LED lighting and bicycle parking facilities. However, it's important to note that these specific features are not a requirement for all renovated bus stops under the program.
One notable feature of the renovated bus stops is the installation of the Kassel special kerb. This system, now standard for new bus stops in Osnabrück, ensures the bus is driven close to the kerb for level boarding and alighting, benefiting mobility-impaired people, parents with prams, and small children. The Kassel special kerb system is based on grooves in the floor for orientation using a white cane.
The Lower Saxony State Transport Authority is funding 75% of the eligible expenditure for construction, land acquisition, and planning, demonstrating a commitment to improving public transportation infrastructure in the region. The modernization grant, however, does not cover the renovation of the cycle path or the expansion of the cycle path around bus stops.
The first renovated bus stop, located on Nordstraße in the Widukindland district, is already operational. In addition, the cycle path around the bus stop on Nordstraße has been renewed and expanded. A tactile guidance system for blind and visually impaired persons will also be installed.
The Osnabrück Bus Stop Program aims to enable barrier-free boarding and alighting, reflecting a priority on service reliability and passenger communication. While no specific new bus stop program details have been announced for next year, future improvements are expected to align with larger infrastructure modernization projects within the region's interconnected rail and bus networks.
