Regional Authority Allows Hunting of Beavers - Germany's Controversial Decision: Beaver to be Killed in Protected Area
A controversial decision has been made in Germany's Oberlausitzer Heath and Pond Landscape Biosphere Reserve. A permit has been granted to kill a beaver, a species once on the brink of extinction but now strictly protected, due to significant damage caused to a local pond farm. The beaver, responsible for a dam break in June, has caused tens of thousands of euros in additional damage. The pond farmer has already incurred repair costs of 190,000 euros since 2019. The permit aims to limit further economic damage and ensure the sustainability of the pond group, a key component of the protected area. Initially, live capture with relocation to France was permitted, with shooting only allowed as a last resort if live capture failed. However, the French government or relevant environmental authorities are responsible for beaver reintroduction in France when options for capturing wild beavers are exhausted. Nature conservation associations, including Nabu, BUND, Green League, and Nature Conservation Association of Saxony, criticized the decision to kill the beaver, calling for a different approach focusing on natural management and offering alternative areas to the affected pond farmer. The beaver, once almost extinct in Germany, has made a remarkable recovery, earning strict protection. However, in this case, the severe damage caused to the pond farm has led to the granting of a permit to kill the beaver as a last resort. The decision has sparked controversy, with nature conservation associations advocating for alternative solutions.
