Historic Bar in Deadwood Recognized as Top in America, Exploring Its History and Must-Try Cocktails
In the heart of Deadwood, South Dakota, lies a unique establishment that seamlessly blends the spirit of the Old West with modern charm. Known as Saloon No. 10, this family-owned establishment has been a staple of the community for 60 years.
Built during the peak of the Black Hills Gold Rush 150 years ago, Saloon No. 10 is more than just a bar. It's a museum, a testament to the Wild West folklore, and a hub for local history enthusiasts. The saloon is famously known as the place where the Wild West legend, Wild Bill Hickok, was shot and killed in 1876 while playing poker. Hickok was holding the "Dead Man’s Hand" of aces and eights at the time, and the saloon is a historic site, rebuilt after a fire, with some original antiques and tours available beneath it where the shooting occurred.
The saloon is also a dog-friendly bar and a generous contributor to the Twin City Animal Shelter in the neighboring community of Lead, S.D. The Keehn family, who own and run the bar, are considered celebrities in Deadwood, having raised over $1 million for local cancer research. Last March, they donated $30,000 for chemotherapy patients using cold caps during treatments.
Inside, the saloon boasts a collection of modern artifacts, including artwork and an elk hide robe worn by an actor in the movie "The Revenant." Co-owner Charlie Struble-Mook, who studied American whiskey, has brought back her own barrels of Buffalo Trace bourbon for the saloon's Old Fashioneds. With over 400 different brands, Saloon No. 10 has one of the most extensive whiskey collections in the Midwest.
The smoked tuaca pheasant is a dish to try if you make it past the rowdy dance floor in the saloon. Upstairs from the saloon is the Deadwood Social Club, Saloon No. 10's sister restaurant, which offers a more "chill vibe" and a rooftop patio.
Saloon No. 10 is a popular spot, filling to capacity with patrons of various ages, including those in their 80s. The saloon is named one of the 29 bars included on the 2025 USA TODAY Bars of the Year list. Whether you're a history buff, a whiskey connoisseur, or simply looking for an authentic Wild West experience, Saloon No. 10 in Deadwood is a must-visit.
