Home compostability certification for butter wrap provided by TÜV for domestic use by ProAmpac
In a notable move towards sustainable packaging solutions, ProAmpac's ButterFresh Parchment has earned TUV Austria's OK Compost Home certification. This wax-free, PFAS-free printed packaging material, designed for butter and margarine, offers grease resistance and dead-fold properties to reduce air exposure and keep food fresh.
ProAmpac's global innovation manager for sustainable paper packaging, Ray Recchia, remarked on the certification, noting that it reflects their dedication to delivering packaging solutions that merge performance, process efficiency, and environmental responsibility.
ButterFresh Parchment isn't merely a compostable packaging solution; it upholds its performance properties and runability during the packing stage. This makes it a prime choice for manufacturers seeking to transition to eco-friendly packaging without compromising on efficiency.
Aldi, a leading supermarket chain, has already spearheaded this shift, switching two of its own-label butter lines into home-recycled, paper-based wrappers. This change is anticipated to eliminate over 10 tonnes of non-recyclable packaging annually.
The carbon footprint of the pack is expected to be significantly lower with the new thermoforming foil compared to PET solutions, thanks to the high biobased content of the new material.
In a related initiative, Scanfill and Sulapac have introduced a thermoforming foil composed of a compostable wood composite as a 'drop-in' alternative to conventional plastic foils. This innovative foil is designed to serve as a sustainable replacement for conventional plastic foils in the industry, maintaining performance and efficiency while minimizing environmental impact.
These advancements underscore the trend towards more sustainable, eco-friendly packaging solutions. ProAmpac's ButterFresh Parchment and the thermoforming foil from Scanfill and Sulapac stand as exemplars of this transition, demonstrating that high-performance packaging can be achieved while minimizing environmental impact.
