Bellway, the housing developer in question, seeks to cut the current 6ft barrier from 1.8m to a mere 0.45m. According to residents, the reduced size would make them vulnerable to anti-social behavior, putting their peace of mind at risk.
One local resident on Breton Drive, which borders the fence, expressed her concern, stating, "The new fence would be absolutely tiny if it's trimmed." She claimed the area behind the fence, known for its secluded woods, had been a hotbed of drug use, alcohol consumption, and even reported attacks on women.
Moreover, young children's safety was also a significant worry. The resident's concerns were rooted in fears that the reduced barrier would not protect them from accessing a nearby pond, which could pose a potential drowning risk during the winter months.
Stockton West MP, Matt Vickers, has intervened on behalf of the residents, urging Bellway to maintain the fence at its current height. The local authorities, however, have stated that the fence is not subject to any planning conditions.
