The maritime industry is taking a significant step forward with the certification of a revolutionary electric propulsion system. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) and HD Korea Shipbuilding and Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) have received the New Technology Qualification (NTQ) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for their innovative Breakerless-MVDC (Medium Voltage Direct Current) Power System.

This groundbreaking technology marks a significant departure from traditional circuit breaker systems, offering a more efficient, reliable, and compact power solution for marine applications. Sanghyun Kim, HD KSOE's senior vice president, emphasized that the certified propulsion system demonstrates the company's advanced capabilities in marine electrification.

The NTQ was awarded following a rigorous evaluation process, which included design assessment, new technology qualification, and the development of rule guidance for technical requirements, safety standards, and regulatory compliance. Byoung-Hun Kwon, HD KSOE's electrification center head, revealed that marine MVDC technology is essential for advancing the electrification and unmanneding of large vessels and ship systems.

The agreement between ABS, HD KSOE, and HD HHI aims to deepen collaboration on forward-thinking solutions for the next generation of vessels. Patrick Ryan, ABS senior vice president and chief technology officer, stated that collaboration is crucial to safely driving the technological progress required by the maritime industry. Ryan also noted that their shared commitment to maritime safety and a smooth transition to clean energy was the driving force behind the cooperation.

HD KSOE aims to lead the commercialization of zero-carbon electric propulsion vessels. The company has already demonstrated its expertise in low-voltage direct current (LVDC) systems, having implemented them across multiple projects, including South Korea's first dual-fuel smart electric ship, the Ulsan Taehwa.

Alternative energy options, particularly electrification, are needed to help the shipping industry achieve net zero by 2050, according to Ryan. The propulsion system uses MVDC to optimize power distribution, minimize energy loss, and enhance the overall efficiency of ship operations.

The next milestones for the project team include developing new requirements for high-voltage systems and a new ABS notation. The NTQ certification recognizes the work of HD Hyundai's affiliates, including HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI), the world's largest shipbuilder, and HD Korea Shipbuilding and Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE), a global leader in the marine industry.
