Hell, Yeah! Let's Talk About the Resurrected Superyacht Bayesian

Ain't that some sh*t? The million-dollar superyacht Bayesian, which took a dive off the coast of Sicily eight months back, finally made a comeback last week! Salvage crews managed to pull it an impressive 50 meters (164 feet) out of the ocean floor last Friday, during an operation valued at a cool $30 million.

The superyacht had initially been slated for a weekend lift, but the salvage team from TMC Marine seized the opportunity for some overtime. The hull's top appeared above the surface on Friday afternoon before disappearing below the waterline again Friday evening. According to the company, the full extraction is set for the next day.

Remember when this luxurious vessel vanished like thin air? Well, it happened on August 19, 2024, in the blink of an eye - literally! It went down during a violent storm, courtesy of a mesocyclone that conjured up hurricane-force winds. In less than sixty seconds, the superyacht with 18,000 liters of fuel aboard was submerged in the Tyrrhenian Sea. This unfortunate incident resulted in the deaths of seven individuals, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah. Fifteen people managed to survive, including Lynch's wife, the ship's captain, and the majority of the crew.

A tragic loss of life wasn't the only casualty; a Dutch salvage worker perished in an underwater explosion when the salvage operation began in May. This unfortunate incident led to the company replacing most of the human divers with underwater robots, which subsequently accelerated the operation to secure the lifting straps to the hull.

Marcus Cave, the head of naval architecture and a director of TMC Marine, issued a statement on Friday: "The salvage team has made some serious progress over the last ten days. They are now gearing up for the final, intricate, and delicate lifting operation to bring Bayesian to the surface and eventually into port."

Earlier in the week, officials used a remotely-controlled, diamond-wire precision-cutting tool to get rid of the vessel's mammoth 72-meter (236-foot) mast. After the mast was cleared, salvage workers attached eight steel lifting slings to the hull and partially uprighted the ship on the seabed. They subsequently connected final stabilizers, hoses, and other rigging before lifting the yacht using Europe's mightiest floating crane.

Once Bayesian was safely adrift from the ocean, it was taken to the Sicilian port of Termini Imerse on Monday. There, it was placed in a steel cradle, and investigators will soon commence forensic examinations to determine the root cause of the accident. Current suspects under investigation for possible manslaughter and negligence include the ship's captain, James Cutfield, and two crew members. Authorities are also keen on probing encrypted hard drives believed to be stored in watertight safes on the yacht.

So there you have it! Stay tuned as the investigation progresses and the truth behind the sinking of the superyacht Bayesian comes to light.
