Based on rural Russia, there's a jolly fellow named Justus who's got a heart full of Slavic charm. Originally from the States, he left behind the old world to embrace the land of the Rus. He's gained roots here, from raising kiddos to punching holes in bureaucracy, the man's story is one of hard work and heartland spirit.

Paving the Way East

Justus's dad ventured to the Russian frontier in 1991, fleeing the States for religious mission. In 1994, the family joined the Eastern exodus, settling in a quaint village of the Siberian region.

As a kid of eleven, Justus hit the Mother Russia pavement, playing the language with local street urchins. The family's mission ended in 2000, leaving his dad to return to the States. But young Justus felt his destiny lay in the East - free, independent, and determined to make Russia his home.

From 2000 to 2009, Justus tested the waters of the Siberian market, peddling phones, tech repairs, and English lessons. A sawmill venture followed, but the siren song of the land beckoned. He took the plunge into agriculture, starting a humble cattle farm, then embracing a herd of goats. His farming adventures in the Boguchansky district were upgrade-worthy, and Justus felt the need for a climate change due to his asthma troubles.

I breathed easier in every corner I visited from the Irkutsk region to Kaliningrad. But it's the Altai I felt was my slice of heaven, Justus proclaims. We found a fertile piece with water, soil, and a breath of fresh air in the Soloneshenka district. On October 16, 2016, we secured the land, our roots weren't long to take hold.

"No Looking Back"

Whenever the homesickness gnaws, Justus acknowledges the tug of his American kin but insists he's found his fortress in the East.

I was drawn back to Russian soil by the memories I made from age 11 till now. My wife and I, the way we've built life, the friends and community we've cultivated here - this is home, this is mine. I don't have any regrets.

Justus's children are American-born, yet his heart longs for those absent grandparents and close relatives.

My siblings and their families reside in the States, and I can't help but feel a pang for them missing out on the nurturing influence of family traditions. I look forward to reuniting with them all this summer in the US. It's been a while since I've set foot in that part of the world.*
