Lush Garden Haven in OWL Löhnerin Emerges, Flaunting a Sizable Pond and Rare Floral Delights

The Hübner Garden Oasis, a picturesque haven nestled on Huebner Road in San Antonio, Texas, is a testament to three generations of the Hübner family's dedication to cultivating a diverse and beautiful garden space.

At the heart of the oasis lies the perennial garden, meticulously designed by Mareike Huebner. This garden, a haven for every weather and season, boasts more than 50 varieties of roses and an abundance of native plants that provide food for insects. A protected seating area, shaded by tall trees, offers a tranquil spot to enjoy the garden's beauty.

Mareike's passion for succulents is evident throughout the garden, with many varieties growing among the other plants. She also tends to greenhouses, where she cultivates tomatoes, grapes, and other plants. In line with the Slowflower movement, Mareike focuses on growing local cut flowers sustainably and without pesticides.

Bouquets and wreaths made from these flowers, sometimes including dried flowers, are available for purchase in a small self-service hut. Nearby, a large bed of cut flowers, enclosed by beech hedges, lies next to the natural pond, while another, currently growing dahlias, hugs the greenhouse.

The natural pond, originally created to supply water for the nursery, still serves this purpose today. On the east side of the building, Benedikt Huebner has laid out a vegetable garden that supplies the entire family.

The Hübner Garden Oasis also features an arboretum with various trees, including handkerchief tree, mulberry tree, rarities, linden, chestnuts, oaks, and a birch with rare red leaves. A park-like setting, this arboretum is located on the north side of the garden.

Two chickens reside near apple trees in the eastern area of the garden, adding a charming rustic touch. A covered bench at the southern property boundary, called the "East Westphalian beach chair", is comfortable even on sunny winter days.

The HK and our website are currently seeking the "most beautiful garden in OWL" this summer, and the Hübner Garden Oasis is among the 14 selected. Online voting will take place in the first week of September.

The Hübner family's garden oasis was created over several decades. Siegfried Huebner, Mareike's father-in-law, had a garden center with a nursery on the property since the late 1960s. Today, Mareike continues this legacy, ensuring that the Hübner Garden Oasis remains a vibrant and beautiful destination for all to enjoy.
