In Saxony, Ascension Day transforms into a lively "Gentlemen's Day" celebration, attracting numerous day-trippers and groups of men to the popular destination of Burg and Talsperre Kriebstein. Under sunny skies and springlike conditions, the lakefront terraces and excursion boats were brimming, as reported by a dpa photographer.
Amidst the family-filled surroundings, the "Gentlemen's Day Singing Group" stood out. Consisting of 19 mature men dressed in black suits with regional hats, they entertained with lively and traditional tunes, accompanied by violin and accordion. This 20-member singing group originated from a state-owned enterprise in Limbach, East Germany, over half a century ago. After a shared beer, the singers boarded an excursion boat in high spirits.
Elsewhere, groups of men filled the countryside with laughter and music, pulling carts laden with alcohol along the nearby roads. Some participants showcased their playful spirit in pink rabbit costumes adorned with felt hats. Across the region, men gathered to indulge in nature, beer gardens, or engaging in outdoor activities, despite the cool wind. The situation center in the Ministry of the Interior described the scene as "peaceful and well-behaved."
Catholics and Protestants in the Free State marked the occasion with traditional church services, often held in forests, on mountain tops, church gardens, or parks, or accompanied by picnics, hikes, bike tours, or concerts.
With roots dating back to the 19th century, this day celebrates male camaraderie, blending social tradition and religious significance. Originating in the Berlin area, "Men's Day" later evolved to include honoring fathers, yet in many regions, it remains centered around male bonding and outdoor activities. Saxony and neighboring Thuringia are known for their cultural events, with music, drinking, and communal singing playing significant roles in the festivities.
This traditional celebration, centered on male bonding rather than solely on fatherhood, has sparked calls for a more inclusive and family-friendly approach in some circles. Yet, in Saxony and other regions, the lively, spirited, and regional folk-centric nature of the celebration remains dominant.
The Commission, however, has also been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation, ensuring safety measures even in the most lively outdoor-living environments, such as home-and-garden landscapes. On the other hand, the "Gentlemen's Day Singing Group" in Saxony, with their traditional tunes and regional attire, continue to entertain and maintain the spirited, lifestlye-focused camaraderie that this celebration is renowned for.
