Manor in the Cotswolds up for sale, which was bestowed upon one of Henry VIII's divorced wives through a settlement
In the picturesque rural parish of Broughton Poggs, nestled between Broadwell, Langford, and the border with Gloucestershire, lies the imposing country house of Broughton Hall. This Grade II-listed property, boasting an array of original features from its various incarnations and extensions, is currently up for sale with a guide price of £3.75 million.
Broughton Poggs, a tiny parish, effectively merged with Filkins in the 18th century, and the two parishes were formally united in 1954. The village's most prominent building, Broughton Hall, has a rich history that dates back to the 1500s.
The oldest part of Broughton Hall is the central section of the north-south range, extended and gentrified by the Goodenoughs. In 1537, the property was sold to Thomas Cromwell, Henry's chancellor and right-hand man. Later, in 1541, it became part of the divorce settlement for one of Henry VIII's wives, Anne of Cleves.
William Burnaby, who was knighted in 1754, acquired Broughton Poggs manor in 1747. He added a large, two-storeyed range to the south of the hall the same year. In 1748, a road was diverted through the village to extend the grounds of Broughton Hall.
Since its sale to Burnaby, Broughton Hall has changed ownership multiple times, but the exact number of ownership changes is not specified in publicly available records. The property passed through the Godfrey, Mowse, and West families before being sold to William Goodenough in 1670. It later passed through the hands of John Thickens, who was declared bankrupt in 1886, and Sir Charles Murray Marling, who sold the estate to Robert Trollope in 1902.
The current owners have meticulously maintained the 4.5 acres of beautifully maintained gardens and grounds, which include a terrace, tennis court, carports and garages, as well as a historic stone pavilion. Inside, more than 8,400 square feet of elegant living space awaits on three floors. The ground floor offers five reception rooms and a high-spec kitchen/breakfast room. Above the ground floor, there are five bedrooms and four bath/shower rooms on the first floor, and a guest bedroom suite, plus three further bedrooms and a family bathroom on the second floor.
The property also features a grand reception hall, a colourful high-ceilinged drawing room, a panelled library, open fireplaces, sash windows, and a newly added garden room. With its rich history, stunning architecture, and extensive grounds, Broughton Hall offers a unique opportunity for anyone seeking a home steeped in history and charm.
