Medicine Club: DOM Launches Community Hub

The Department of Medicine (DOM) at a prominent academic institution has unveiled its latest initiative: the DOM Community Space. Located in 3-5100, this multi-room complex is designed to cater to the needs of a diverse community, including faculty, APPs, residents, fellows, and staff, who often work flexibly or remotely.

The DOM Community Space, spearheaded by Stephen Hammes, MD, PhD, Tim Heffer, and Kate French, is a testament to the department's commitment to fostering a collaborative and productive work environment. The space features a mix of open and private workstations, meeting spaces, and amenities, all designed with the modern worker in mind.

One of the standout features of the DOM Community Space is its natural light and preserved historical elements, such as high ceilings and large windows. This not only creates a bright and airy atmosphere but also maintains the character of the building's past.

Each workstation is equipped with a phone, mouse, keyboard, docking station or desktop computer, and video capable dual monitors, ensuring that everyone has the tools they need to work efficiently. For those who prefer a quieter environment, noise cancelling headphones are available at Open Stations and Shared Offices.

The DOM Community Space also offers a range of collaborative spaces, including Group Meeting Spaces, Huddle Rooms, and an Open Booth. Each private/shared office and huddle space also comes equipped with a whiteboard, making it easy for teams to brainstorm and collaborate.

To further promote a serene atmosphere, the space is equipped with noise-absorbing furniture and materials. For those who need to print or copy documents, a Xerox multifunction device is conveniently located within the space.

A kitchenette, stocked with complimentary coffee, water, and snacks, provides a comfortable space for staff to take a break and socialise. Artwork and photographs from DOM members can also be submitted for display, adding a personal touch to the space.

The DOM Community Space held an Open House/Happy Hour on March 15, 2024, giving staff and faculty a chance to explore the new facilities and network with colleagues.

In a statement, Kate French expressed that the new approach to officing follows suit with many other large academic medical centers. She also mentioned that lockers can be booked for up to one week to store personal items, and "rental" laptops are available for use.

Stephen Hammes, MD, PhD, expressed his excitement about the new community space, stating that it creates a conducive environment for the ever-growing department and provides collaborative spaces for all to enjoy.
