Mixing it Up: Master the Art of Blending in Oil Painting

Blending is a popular technique in oil painting that involves smoothly transitioning between different colors. This technique creates a gradual change in color and helps achieve realistic shading. Unfortunately, the rapid drying time of acrylic paints makes blending difficult. Oil paint, with its extended working period, is more suitable for blending.

Excessive blending by new painters often results in an over-refined, plastic appearance, rather than the desired realism. The key to successful blending lies in utilizing it sparingly and maintaining a balance with unaltered brush strokes and colors.

From close up, the painting may appear rough. However, as you take a step back, all the individual brush strokes and broken colors come together, creating the illusion of form. Avoid the pitfall of striving for perfection up close. Instead, embrace the messiness and let the painting seamlessly come together when viewed from a distance.
