Modern art museum designed by Jean Nouvel set to debut in Paris' city center
After 40 years of standing, the Fondation Cartier for Contemporary Art is getting ready to flip a massive chapter in its history. Set for opening on October 25, 2025, this cultural institution will unveil its brand-new home at 2, Place du Palais-Royal in the heart of Paris, bidding farewell to Boulevard Raspail - its residence since 1994.
Prime Real Estate
Nestled in a stunning example of Haussmannian architecture, the new building previously housed the Louvre des Antiquaires from 1978. This premium location - right opposite the famed Louvre Museum and just stones' throw away from the Ministry of Culture - strengthens contemporary art's presence in a district already packed with prestigious institutions.
Although the exterior retains its historical elegance, the interior has undergone a complete overhaul based on the vision of Jean Nouvel. With the recent dismantling of the striking giant mirror concealing the construction site since October 2022, we've now entered the final phase leading to the opening.
A Bold Ambition
Conststructed using contemporary materials like recycled steel and concrete, the new building will welcome the public with 8,500 square meters of space, including 6,500 square meters dedicated to exhibition areas. The building's unique selling point lies in five fully adaptable stages that drastically alter the traditional museum experience. As Jean Nouvel puts it, 'Moving into such an impressive site, both in terms of its location and its history, means inventing something new.'
This architectural adaptability will let spaces and visitor routes be modified, creating vertical volumes up to 11 meters high.
A Taste of the Future
While Parisians eagerly wait for the unveiling, the new Fondation Cartier will offer a sneak peek during the 19th Venice Architecture Biennale. The exhibition, on view at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini until September 14, showcases Jean Nouvel's innovative concepts designed for these upcoming exhibit spaces. The presence here emphasizes the international scope of the project - it's not just a relocation; rather, it's part of a broader reflection on the essence of contemporary exhibition spaces.
The Grand Debut
To celebrate this historic reopening on October 25, a major exhibition titled 'Exposition Générale' will dominate the new space. Featuring approximately 600 works by over a hundred artists who have collaborated with the Fondation over the past four decades, the exhibition will reflect the diversity of visions and artistic languages that have molded its history. This remarkable journey will present visitors with an opportunity to discover - or rediscover! - the richness of a collection amassed since 1984, now spanning nearly 4,500 works by 500 different artists.
