Nendo in collaboration with AREP redesign the internal spaces of France's high-speed trains, TGV.
The French high-speed rail is set for a transformation with the introduction of the InOui TGV, a new standard in rail environments. This innovative train is the result of a collaboration between French industrial design agency AREP and Japanese studio Nendo, two design powerhouses that have come together to create a unique and unparalleled passenger experience.
The design philosophy behind the InOui TGV is rooted in the 'Flow' concept, which emphasizes a dynamic fluidity through form, texture, and colour. This approach is characterised by the use of geometric abstraction, seamlessly integrating rectangles, circles, squares, and arches to evoke continuity and smooth transitions within the train interiors. The goal is to enhance the passenger’s sensory experience and perception of space, providing a sense of intimacy in public spaces.
One of the key features of the InOui TGV is its interior design, which prioritizes easy cleaning, maintenance, and upgrades. The designers have used ultra-durable surfaces and structures for the seats and tables, ensuring the train remains in top condition for years to come. The interior also boasts 97% recyclable materials, reflecting a commitment to low- and post-carbon design.
The InOui TGV's design includes soft shapes throughout, from the forms of seats and banquettes to the lighting elements. Natural light is used extensively to help cut down on energy consumption. Bold elements, like the sparkling yellow lamps and red and yellow seat pockets, provide a contrast in the new train's design.
A horizon line runs through the interiors and exteriors of the InOui TGV, reinforcing perspective and evoking the surface of water. Colours are darker towards the ground and become lighter as the eye rises through the carriage, up to the lighting elements in the ceiling. The designers describe the train as looking like no other means of transport, making its way through the landscape like a river.
The InOui TGV's two-level Bistro carriage is a highlight of the train. It features a self-service restaurant on the lower level and 28 bench-like seats on the upper deck lounge. The collaboration between AREP and Nendo dates back to 2018, and they have worked together to create a passenger environment that fosters a gentle, shared atmosphere.
SNCF hopes the InOui TGV will enter service in 2026, offering passengers a comfortable, sustainable, and unique high-speed rail experience. The InOui TGV is set to redefine rail travel in France, providing a seamless, almost fluid journey that is both aesthetically pleasing and environmentally conscious.
