Nine memorable landmarks to explore

On September 14, 2025, Kiel's historic sites will open their doors for a special event known as "Heritage Day". Nine iconic locations will be accessible for visitors, offering a unique opportunity to explore the city's rich history and architectural heritage.

The historic carp ponds at Michelsberg, Maienbrunnen 34 (rear), will be open for viewing from 10 AM to 3 PM. Tours at the nearby Michaelsberg Monastery, built in 1015 and undergoing comprehensive renovation, are 60 minutes long and start at 11 am and 1 pm, led by you. Guided tours with interesting facts about the history and restoration of the ponds will be held every full hour from 10 AM to 2 PM.

Tours at the former slaughterhouse, a surviving example from the beginning of the 20th century, are 60 minutes long and start at 11 am and 1 pm. The slaughterhouse is being transformed into a future-oriented quarter as part of the "Vision for Holtenau Ost" development plan, but no specific reopening date for the slaughterhouse itself is provided.

The New Town Hall, originally a seminary and the city hall since the mid-20th century, will also be open for tours, which are 90 minutes long and start at 11 am and 1:30 pm, led by Mayor Wolfgang Metzner.

The local committee of the German Foundation for Monument Protection will be present with an information booth under the leadership of Herbert van Beek at the Music Pavilion of the "Wilde Rose" beer garden, which was renovated and restored to its original appearance in 2025. Lectures about the Music Pavilion are held at 9:30 AM, 11:30 AM, 1:30 PM, and 3:30 PM, each lasting approximately 45 minutes.

The Music Pavilion in the Hain will be open from 1 PM to 7 PM, with a dance event as an accompanying program. The pavilion hosts non-commercial music performances, theater and dance events, workshops, and exhibitions.

The Freemasons' Lodge "Zur Verbrüderung an der Regnitz", located at Franz-Ludwig-Straße 16, will also be open on "Day of Open Monuments". Two lectures, each lasting up to 45 minutes, will provide insights into Freemasonry.

The small residential building at Wunderburg 9, built in 1902 according to plans by Chrysostomus Martin and recently renovated, will be open from 11 am to 3 pm, with access to the upper floors via stairs.

Lastly, the "Haus zum Kranich", built around 1750 and with a history as a disco in the 80s, will be open from 8 pm to 11 pm, accessed via the Generalsgasse.
