Multitude of Spectators over Festival Weekend on Museum Isle - Numerous attendees enjoyed the museum weekend festival on Museum Island.

The 200th birthday bash for Museum Island in the heart of Berlin-Mitte kicked off with a three-day fiesta! From the late nights of Friday to the lazy afternoons of Sunday, hordes of enthusiasts grooved to concerts in the Colonnade Courtyard, joined heated discussions on guided tours, or partook in one of around 70 open debates to learn about the past and future of the island.

Matthias Wemhoff, the island spokesman, estimated around 55,000 visitors and announced the event as a "rockin' start" in high spirits. "The vibe was electric, and our open-air ballet of sounds added to the festivities," he said, highlighting the diverse lineup of spoken word wizards and talented musicians performing throughout the weekend.

The official party took place on Sunday, honoring the United Nations World Heritage Day. Marion Ackermann, the dashing new head of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation (SPD), shone at the event. "It's essential that we not only preserve the majesty of Museum Island as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but also add contemporary flair and draw in new audiences," she emphasized.

Ackermann further hinted at the ongoing progress of the Pergamon Museum, one of the five star attractions on the island. The venerable North Wing, home to the Pergamon Altar, is anticipated to open its doors to visitors in spring 2027. "We're moving beyond timing in years and counting days until we can once more walk through the grand Hall of the Altar," Ackermann exclaimed.

The emotional anniversary celebration will unfurl over five tumultuous yet thrilling years, with each year devoted to one of the island’s museums. This year pays homage to the oldest building on the island, the Old Museum. The following year, the Old National Gallery will raise a glass on its 150th birthday. 2027 sees the reopening of the Pergamon Museum in the spotlight. The Bode Museum will steal the show in 2029, and all buildings will unite in a grand finale in 2030.
