Oaxaca's FIEL literary event, set to replace the FILO, promises to showcase 21 national and 16 local authors.
The International Writing and Reading Fair (FIEL) will make its debut in Oaxaca, Mexico, from August 31 to September 7, 2025, replacing the cancelled International Book Fair of Oaxaca (FILO) this year. The event will take place in the city's Zócalo.
At present, there are no specific details available about the FIEL 2025, such as its exact schedule, participating authors, or publishers. However, it is expected that official event websites, literary organisations, and cultural institutions in Oaxaca will provide more information closer to the event date. It is advisable to check these official sources or local Oaxaca cultural platforms for updates.
The FIEL promises to be a vibrant cultural event, featuring 21 national writers, 16 local writers, and four writers from other countries. Some of the confirmed writers include Juan Carlos Monedero, Mayra Santos-Febres, and José Ramón Fabelo. Additionally, the fair will include 11 storytelling sessions, 16 artistic performances, and four conservatories aimed at specific communities, including the LGTBQ+ community, traditional cooks, mother tongue, and special abilities.
An exhibition and sale of books will take place at the FIEL, featuring 60 exhibitors from Mexico City and 10 from Oaxaca. Over 300 publishing houses will be represented, including 1,450 Editions, Ediciones La Social, Almadía, FR, Cuajilote, Granén Porrúa, La Maquinucha Editions, and the editorial of the Autonomous University "Benito Juárez" of Oaxaca (UABJO).
The organisers of FILO, owned by entrepreneur Guillermo Quijas, have announced that they will use the cancellation as an opportunity for reflection and redesign. The cancellation was announced on July 24, 2025, due to current conditions in the cultural financing sphere.
For those interested in staying informed about the FIEL, a WhatsApp channel is available for the latest news, opinion articles, entertainment, trends, and more.
Mexican journalists and activists are also protesting the killing of communicators in Gaza, calling for not normalizing war. More information about this protest can be found elsewhere.
Stay tuned for more updates on the International Writing and Reading Fair (FIEL) 2025 in Oaxaca. It's shaping up to be an exciting event for literature and culture enthusiasts!
