One man's nostalgic ideal revitalizes vacation spots, popularizing "Barncations" as a new trend in travel.
Reimagining the Past, One Barn Stay at a Time
Meet Kyle Miklasz, a man who cherishes his childhood summers spent at his grandparents' farm in Viola. With a big family and endless adventures, the place held a special place in his heart. Fast forward to 2021, Kyle and his wife Erin saw an opportunity to recreate those golden memories in the countryside with their own brood. After stumbling upon an ex-dairy barn in Arena, the duo embarked on a journey to breathe new life into it, transforming it into a one-of-a-kind barn house vacation stay.
"Initially, we thought this could be a spot for our growing family and all our loved ones," Kyle explains. "But it soon morphed into something unique."
Welcome to the flagship Arena Big Sky Barnhouse, a haven offering amenities for every age group. The property sprang from identifying a void in the market, as Kyle and Erin aimed to create an immersive experience unparalleled for large families and groups.
Step inside this extraordinary barn-turned-home, and you'll find an array of attractions, including a 9-hole indoor mini golf course, a movie theater, a workout center, and a game room.
The first guests graced the Arena 'Barndominium' in the fall of 2023, and soon thereafter, the second Arena location opened its doors. With sleeping space for at least 20 guests and a plethora of recreational activities, including an indoor pool with a rock-climbing wall, an indoor playground for kids, an indoor basketball/pickleball court, and a fire pit, this retreat is a dream for families and groups craving an unforgettable experience.
"It's all about generating spaces where families and friends can gather, create lasting memories, and forge strong bonds," Kyle said.
Schmooze with barnyard animals at Kyle's latest venture, readying to welcome guests in late June. Previously a stable, the sprawling 91-acre property is now home to a menagerie of farm animals, including horses, goats, llamas, donkeys, ducks, and peacocks. In partnership with Pecks Farm Markets, guests can interact with these charming creatures.
Kyle's grandparents were close friends with Grandpa Peck, and reviving this relationship with his children adds a poignant touch to this adventure.
Partnering with the Bronskis, longtime friends of Kyle's parents, the next Big Sky Barnhouse retreat in Spring Green promises to become an elevated vacation paradise. This collaboration marks the 12th location to open over the course of two years for Big Sky Barnhouse. Miklasz and his team have expanded into neighboring Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, and Tennessee, with no signs of slowing down.
"Today, the rewarding part is recreating those experiences and developing fun areas that families can enjoy," Kyle concludes.
