Organic compost facility constructed in Isabela City
Isabela City in Basilan Introduces Organic Compost Facility
In a significant move towards waste management and sustainable food production, the City Government of Isabela in Basilan province has handed over the Organic Compost Facility to the women of Barangay Kaumpurnah Zone 2 [1][3][4]. This project, part of the broader initiative "Project Zero: Zero Waste, Zero Chemicals, Zero Hunger," aims to convert biodegradable waste into organic fertilizer, reducing waste, restoring soil nutrients, and promoting sustainable food production.
The facility, funded with ₱586,666.66 through the Gender and Development (GAD) Program, is implemented by the City Government's General Services Office (CGSO) [1]. Previously, the site was a dumpsite at Kaumpurnah Elementary School, but it has been transformed into a knowledge center for organic farming [1].
The primary beneficiaries of this project are women and mothers of students at Kaumpurnah Elementary School. They are tasked with maintaining the facility and implementing proper waste management practices at home to ensure the project's sustainability [1].
The turnover of the facility was witnessed by CIO and GAD Focal Mendry-Ann Lim, Community Affairs Associate Anna Sahibil, Isabela East District 2 Public School District Supervisor Rachel Oliveros, and Kaumpurnah Elementary School Principal Rasheeva Atara.
Mayor Sitti Djalia Turabin-Hataman emphasized the importance of collective action and vision for the community in Isabela City. She highlighted that many people are working together to make their dreams a reality in Isabela City [2].
Moreover, there is collaboration with other groups such as "Kids Who Farm" in other barangays like Barangay Marang Marang to expand organic waste composting initiatives, indicating a wider city-wide approach to sustainable organic waste management [2].
This facility serves both as a practical waste management solution and as an educational tool promoting organic farming and sustainable food security among the local community, especially women and mothers who play a critical role in household waste management and food production [1][3]. The beneficiaries have pledged to maintain the facility and ensure it benefits more residents.
