Organization deepens collaboration with Continental in the advancement of solar-powered electric vehicle, Sion's design and production.
Continental, a global leader in the mobility industry with over 150 years of experience, has announced an expansion of its cooperation with Solar Mobility OEM. This collaboration aims to integrate advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) from Continental into the Sion series-validation vehicles.
Solar Mobility OEM, a company on a mission to make every vehicle solar, is known for its solar-integrated electric vehicles, such as the Sion. The Sion, a spacious and family-friendly solar electric vehicle, boasts an outer shell consisting of 456 seamlessly integrated solar half-cells.
Continental's involvement in this project underscores its commitment to sustainable mobility and innovation in automotive technologies. The company has already demonstrated its dedication to renewable energy and reduced emissions through initiatives such as installing a large photovoltaic system at its factory in Romania [1] and modernizing its industrial platform with investments in sustainability [2]. Continental has also set ambitious sustainability goals, aiming for 100% carbon neutrality, emission-free mobility, circular economy practices, and responsible sourcing by 2050 [3].
The ADAS is expected to make driving the Sion safer and more comfortable, while ensuring compliance with the upcoming stricter European Union road safety regulations (GSR). The future-proof ADAS feature is planned to be standard in every Sion, with an estimated retail price of approximately €25,000 net.
Engineers from both companies have started an intense test program with the series-validation vehicles on the Continental proving ground in Frankfurt to further validate and improve the integrated technologies.
It is important to note that the Sion's battery will allow for a maximum charging capacity of up to 75 kW (DC) and 11 kW (AC), and the solar technology is engineered to extend the vehicle's range, reduce fuel costs, and decrease CO2 emissions.
This collaboration between Continental and Solar Mobility OEM is a significant step towards advancements in sustainable mobility and the integration of innovative technologies in electric vehicles.
