Nizhny Novgorod is blooming greener with every spadeful of earth

A major greening operation is in full swing in Nizhny Novgorod.

Construction sites and city landscapes are witnessing a flurry of activity, with trees and shrubs pushing their way into the urban fabric.

On the Gorky Rowing Canal embankment, and in the city's heart, new greenery is being introduced:

  • 581 mighty black pines
  • 177 sweet-smelling lilacs
  • 708 Goldfinger currant bushes

Choosing the right urban-friendly trees and shrubs matters. These grow well in tight quarters, close to roads and streets, and can withstand strong winds.

93% of the planted plants have already taken root, surpassing previous figures.

Plans are underway to plant over a hundred large-leaved lindens on Semashko, Kovalikhinsky, Minin, and Varvarskaya streets, aiming to restore their historical grandeur.

City head Yuri Shalaev's decision favors the planting of large trees, particularly in the city center.

On the Gorky Rowing Canal embankment, a delightful avenue of conifers is being born. The embankment, previously void of greenery, will soon undergo a remarkable transformation, with an additional 11,500 square meters of lush lawns.

Conifers were chosen for their resilience. These trees not only withstand wind but also thrive near water and have a robust root system that easily adapts to sandy soils, requiring minimal maintenance.

Initial watering is crucial for successful rooting.

As the trees mature, they will democratize the embankment, offer sound and fume protection, and contribute to air purification.

City residents welcome these changes with open arms.

Dmitry Elizarov commented, "It was too barren around here. A wall of greenery from the road – that's a brilliant solution!"

Soon, many trees will be planted in the historical city center, where shady spots have been scarce due to dense construction.

The choice of plants was made based on their ability to grow easily in the city environment.

Small-leaved lindens are a perfect fit for the urban lifestyle, known for their long life.

Reports suggest that this greening initiative may be part of broader corporate sustainability efforts, involving around 5,500 tree seedlings and 2,000 other plants[4]. Yet, specific details about the tree species and local impacts remain limited.

Still, tangible local results may follow the community-driven environmental action model, where both tree planting and waste management have successfully improved city life[1]. Stay tuned for more updates!
