Summer swim in the heart of Paris: Seine River to host public swimming pools. - Paris lets summer swimmers dive into the Seine's pools.

Hey there, vacationers!:Paris is not just about famous landmarks anymore. Mark your calendars for July – It's time to pack your swimwear as three public pools will be constructed right in the heart of the city's iconic river, the Seine!

Sports Minister Marie Barsacq is all smiles about the idea, saying, "Everyone should be able to swim in the Seine this summer!" The river's water quality improvements, demonstrated during last year's Olympic Games, have finally paid off.

So, where exactly can you dive in?

  • Near the Swan Island, close to the Eiffel Tower
  • Near Notre-Dame Cathedral
  • National Library

Each pool will be equipped with changing rooms, showers, lifeguards, and sunbathing areas.

Safety First! This ain't no wild swim! Water quality will undergo constant monitoring to ensure a safe swim for everyone.

Don't worry, families and children – there's a special swimming area just for you near the Eiffel Tower. The pools will operate throughout the summer, utilising floating pontoons and containers that will be removed in winter.

Sports Minister Marie Barsacq shares, "Given climate change and upcoming hot summers, we need places to cool off." And Mayor Anne Hidalgo echoes, "It's about improving the quality of life in the city in the face of expected temperature increases."

The idea of swimming in the Seine again has been a long-cherished dream for Parisians, officially banned in 1923. However, with significant investments towards water quality improvements, that dream is finally coming true. Oh, and by the way, swimming in the Seine wasn't just some far-fetched idea. It was still happening informally until the early 60s!

Fun Fact: Turns out, the improvements in water quality and the opening of these pools weren't just because Paris wanted a cool dip. It was all about preparing for the 2024 Olympic Games and meeting EU Water Framework Directive standards! According to reports, extensive works were done to improve the Seine's water quality, including the construction of a new underground stormwater reservoir near Austerlitz and the redevelopment of the Saint-Michel wastewater outlet. And despite improvements, there have been temporary closures due to bacteria detection, highlighting ongoing challenges in maintaining water quality.

  1. In an effort to enhance the lifestyles of city dwellers, considering the upcoming hot summers and climate change, the French government is introducing vocational training programs for lifeguards to ensure the safety of swimmers in the newly constructed swimming pools in the Seine, Paris.
  2. For a sustainable home-and-garden lifestyle, homeowners in Paris may opt for vocational training in sustainable water management practices, learning from the ongoing improvements made to the Seine's water quality, such as the construction of a new underground stormwater reservoir near Austerlitz and the redevelopment of the Saint-Michel wastewater outlet.
