Hedgehog Safety Pushed as Collisions with Lawn Mowing Robots Rise
Concerns regarding the safety of hedgehogs have led to discussions about implementing night driving bans for robotic lawn mowers. The focus is particularly on regions like Baden-Württemberg and across Germany, where the nocturnal animals are vulnerable.
The rise in reported cases of injured hedgehogs coincides with the increased use of robotic lawn mowers, causing many gardens to be no-go zones for these small creatures. These mowers, which are designed to keep lawns well-groomed with minimal effort, might be trapping and injuring unsuspecting hedgehogs during their nightly foraging.
BUND in Baden-Württemberg and Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research (Leibniz-IZW) have advocated for a nighttime prohibition for these garden tools, following the example set by cities such as Cologne, Mainz, and soon Erfurt.
Alarmingly, pain and suffering often go undetected due to the victims' capacity to retreat into bushes and hedges following an accident. Numbers from Leibniz-IZW show that nearly half of the over 370 documented cases of mowing-related injuries among hedgehogs nationwide did not survive their injuries.
As the number of hedgehogs in Germany steadily declines due to various factors like habitat loss, increased road fatalities, and diminishing food sources, concerns for their welfare escalate. Founded in 1890, the European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) is currently on the German Red List warning category and the International Union for Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) Red List classifies it as "potentially threatened."
Research institutions and conservation groups continue to discuss ways to minimize the impact of robotic lawn mowers on wildlife, including the development of safety standards, crash-tested dummies, and automatic sensor systems to detect and avoid hedgehogs. Public education, legislation, and incentives for hedgehog-friendly lawn care also play key roles in the ongoing effort to safeguard these small, nocturnal creatures.
