The Former Ex-Kulttankstelle Spot on the Kiez Gets a Fresh Moniker: The Area Becomes Known as "Paloma District"

After deliberating over nearly 250 suggestions, a jury selected the name "Paloma District" for the area previously occupied by the Esso Houses on the Reeperbahn. Citizens had till May 15th to submit their proposals, whether by postcard or email. This chosen name is slated to be used in the media, maps, and the district itself.

The anonymous individual responsible for the winning suggestion will be rewarded with free admission to all concerts, club nights, and events at the Molotow for an entire year. The Molotow, a music club, was formerly located within the complex that housed the Esso Houses.

"La Paloma" Means "The Dove"

The term "Paloma" appealed to the jury due to its geographical relevance. In Spanish, "La Paloma" translates to "The Dove." This is fitting, considering the presence of Dove Street bordering the district. Additionally, the name evokes memories of a popular song associated with the Kiez: Famous Hamburg musician Hans Albers, also known for the tune "Auf der Reeperbahn nachts um halb eins," made "La Paloma" popular in 1944.

Plans for the development of the district adjacent to the Spielbudenplatz have been a subject of controversy for years. The Esso Houses, named after the on-site gas station, were demolished in 2014, following their purchase by a Southern German investor, the Bavarian House Building, in 2009. A protracted conflict between residents and the investor over building maintenance preceded the demolition.

In the subsequent partnership agreement, participants reached a compromise regarding the proposed architectural plans: The Bavarian House Building intends to construct approximately 200 apartments, a hotel, and a hostel on the 6,200-square-meter plot. Over the next few years, various shops, bars, and clubs are also expected to emerge.
