Rediscovered Talent: Harburg's Extraordinary Artist, Jens Hoff

In an unexpected turn of events, the Sparkasse Harburg-Buxtehude has transformed its main branch at Sand into a gallery, showcasing a dozen paintings by the largely unknown artist Jens Hoff.

Born in Harburg in 1954, Jens Hoff spent many years living in Hannover. His works, a unique blend of abstract and figurative elements, have now found a home in the heart of his hometown. The gallery will be open to visitors during the bank's opening hours over the next three months.

Jens Hoff's works have gained recognition from art connoisseurs, including Harald Falckenberg. However, in his hometown, he remained largely unknown. That is, until Jens Brauer, head of the department of local history, expressed interest in his works. Upon viewing the paintings, Brauer was captivated, describing it as a moment that touched him intensely.

The displayed paintings feature a dynamic interplay between form and colour, combining realistic imagery with mystical, dreamlike qualities. A portion of these paintings will be displayed on the first floor of the Sparkasse Harburg-Buxtehude's main branch at Sand, while the remainder will be housed in storage at the Harburg City Museum.

Jens Hoff's brother, who recently offered paintings from his estate to the Harburg City Museum, stated that his brother lived for art but couldn't live off it. This rediscovery of Jens Hoff's works by the local community and art enthusiasts alike is a testament to the enduring power of art to captivate and inspire.

For those interested in viewing more of Jens Hoff's works, it is recommended to check galleries or museums specialising in contemporary or modern art, or official artist websites and social media for the latest updates.

This initiative by the Sparkasse Harburg-Buxtehude provides an opportunity for the general public to see the works of this local artist, who, despite a life lived largely unnoticed, has left a lasting impression on those who have encountered his art.

The transformed gallery within the Sparkasse Harburg-Buxtehude's main branch at Sand offers a rare glimpse into the unique lifestyle of Jens Hoff, showcasing his paintings that creatively merge home-and-garden and theater elements, such as vivid stage sets and depictions of suburban gardens.

As his works continue to garner recognition, Jens Hoff's hometown now sees him as a local celebrity in the realm of art, much like a star gracing the stage of a theatre frequented by the community.
